Hi Everyone,

Today are discussion was about jobs, work, and employment.Related image We began with listing all the words that come to mind when we think of jobs – work, responsibility, duty ,task, employment, occupation, career, part time/full time, free lance, salary, benefits, profession, office, commitment, and more.

Next we took all 26 letters of the alphabet and split up into groups and listed all the jobs we could think of starting with certain letters of the alphabet. We were really challenged when it came to the letters Q, X, Y, and Z! But, you all did a very good job listing lots of different jobs.

We watched this short film called “When I Grow Up” about a girl who doesn’t know what she wants to be when she grows up. Take another look here:

After watching we tried to name all the jobs we saw, and talked about another theme of the film, you can be what ever you want to be, just follow your dream!

Next we discussed what jobs we would love to do and which jobs we would hate to do. And we also talked about what are the most important aspects of a job. Most of the jobs we’d hate to do were risky, or dirty, or just unpleasant. Some of us have had these type of jobs in our lives, and you just have to deal with it.

This next film we watched is called “The Employment” which is an unusual story about very unusual jobs. This is one of the “jobs” from the beginning of the film – a man who works as a lamp.Image result for the employment santiago grasso

Watch the film here and see all the weird jobs these people have. What is going on??

We saw that the jobs were a table, a chair, a ceiling lamp, a coat rack, a key holder, a taxi, traffic lights, a door, an elevator, a locker, and a doormat. Some of the messages and themes of this film that we discussed were the irony of the man who starts off at home using these jobs and then ends up as a doormat. We talked about the inhuman and degrading aspects of these jobs. After the final credits the film ends with the man who works as a lamp, taking off the lampshade and throwing it on the ground. And he walks off stage. Some people cheered the fact that he didn’t want to work as a lamp anymore, and that he was off to lead a revolution!! This is an odd film that made some of us feel uncomfortable with the depiction of the workers and their jobs. But, who knows how much change may happen in the workplace in the future…..
